Dungeness Crab Fishing in Berkeley, November and December

If you searched for dungeness crab fishing in Berkeley, this is the page for it. We are Reel Addiction Sportfishing, a small, captain-run charter out of the Berkeley Marina. Crab season is short, so we keep the trip simple. Our main crab trip is the Crab Combo, which is Dungeness crab plus lingcod or rockfish on the same day. You go home with crab and fish, and the whole haul is cleaned for free. It suits people who want a full day of fishing out of it, not just crab. It also suits families and friends who want crab on the table for the holidays. If your group only wants crab, we also run a whole boat crab only trip. Either way, it is a small boat with a small group and a captain who runs it himself.

Crab season for us is November and December. The calendar opens early November, and the weekends go first. If you want a date around the holidays, book early. Outside of those two months we are running other trips. In winter it is sturgeon inside the Bay, and the rest of the year it is salmon, halibut, lingcod, rockfish and bluefin tuna, depending on the month. If you are not sure whether a specific date in November or December is open, the booking calendar will show it, and the captain can confirm by phone.

Here is what crab costs. The Crab Combo is $350 per angler, up to 6 guests. That gets you Dungeness crab plus lingcod or rockfish, with free cleaning on the whole haul. If you want the boat to yourselves, the Whole Boat Crab Combo is $2,100 for the boat, up to 6 guests. The Whole Boat Crab Only trip is $1,900 for the boat, up to 6 guests. Whole boat means one price and nobody on board you did not invite. For anything not listed here, like extra charges or what the day includes beyond cleaning, ask the captain before you book and he will tell you straight.

The boats are two 30-foot six-pack boats. Six-pack means six anglers each, so the most you will share a boat with is five other people. Between the two boats we take twelve anglers a day. Both boats are run by USCG licensed master captains. Capt. Ben Mechling runs the operation out of the Berkeley Marina. These are the same boats we use for salmon, halibut, lingcod, rockfish, bluefin and sturgeon, so the crew knows the water and knows the boats.

We depart from 201 University Avenue, Berkeley, at the Berkeley Marina. The areas we fish include Berkeley, San Francisco, San Francisco Bay, Oakland and Emeryville. Departure times can change with the trip and the day, so the captain confirms your meeting time when you book. Plan to show up on time and ready to go. If you have a question about parking or where exactly to walk once you are at the marina, call ahead and ask.

As for what to bring, the main thing to know is that cleaning is on us. On the Crab Combo, the whole haul gets cleaned for free, crab and fish. On our other trips all gear and tackle are provided. For the crab trip, confirm with the captain what is on the boat and whether there is anything you should bring yourself. Beyond that, bring what you need to be comfortable for a day on the water, and something to carry your catch home in. If you are unsure about anything, ask before the day, not at the dock.

Do I need a fishing license? The facts we can stand behind on this page do not cover licensing, so ask the captain when you book. He will tell you exactly what each person in your group needs before you head out. Do not guess on this one, just call and ask.

How many crab can I keep? We are not going to put a number on this page. Crab rules and what a given day produces are things the captain will go over with you directly. Ask him when you book, and he will explain how the crab part of the day works and what you can expect to take home.

Can I book the whole boat for crab? Yes. You have two options. The Whole Boat Crab Combo is $2,100 for the boat, up to 6 guests, and covers crab plus lingcod or rockfish. The Whole Boat Crab Only trip is $1,900 for the boat, up to 6 guests. Both are good for private groups, holiday outings and families who want the boat to themselves. Weekends in November and December go first, so private groups should lock in a date early.
